Keeping Kids and Pets Safe Around the Pool

Summer’s here, and the pool is calling! Whether you’re a seasoned pool owner or a first-timer, ensuring the safety of your kids and pets around the water is paramount. A backyard pool should be a source of joy and relaxation, not anxiety. Let’s explore some essential pool safety tips to help you create a safe and fun environment for everyone.

For the Little Swimmers (and Non-Swimmers!):

  • Supervision is Key: Never leave children unattended near the pool, even for a moment. Active supervision means putting away distractions like phones and books and keeping your eyes on the water.
  • Teach Swimming Skills Early: Enroll children in age-appropriate swimming lessons as early as possible. Familiarity with the water and basic swimming skills can be life-saving.
  • Establish Clear Rules: Set and enforce strict rules, such as no running near the pool, no diving in shallow areas, and no pushing others into the water.
  • Fences and Gates: Install a sturdy, self-latching fence around the pool with a gate that is difficult for children to open.
  • Pool Alarms: Consider installing pool alarms that sound when someone enters the water.
  • Pool Covers: Use a safety pool cover when the pool is not in use.
  • Life Jackets: For young children or those who are not strong swimmers, have them wear Coast Guard-approved life jackets.
  • Teach Water Safety Skills: Educate children about water safety, including how to recognize and avoid dangerous situations, how to float, and how to call for help.
  • CPR Training: Learn CPR and encourage other caregivers to do the same. This crucial skill can make a significant difference in an emergency.

Protecting Your Furry Friends:

  • Introduce Pets to the Pool Gradually: Some dogs love water, while others are hesitant. Introduce your pet to the pool slowly and under close supervision.
  • Teach Them an Exit Strategy: Show your pet where the steps or shallow areas are so they can easily exit the pool.
  • Never Leave Pets Unattended: Just like children, pets should never be left unsupervised near the pool.
  • Provide Shade and Fresh Water: Ensure your pet has access to shade and fresh water to prevent overheating and dehydration.
  • Rinse After Swimming: Chlorine and other pool chemicals can irritate your pet’s skin and fur. Rinse them off with fresh water after they swim.
  • Consider a Pet Life Vest: If your pet is not a strong swimmer or if you have a breed that is not naturally buoyant, consider a pet life vest.
  • Pool Alarms for Pets: Some pool alarms are designed to detect pets entering the water, which can provide an extra layer of security.
  • Fence them out: If your pet is not allowed in the pool area, make sure that your pool fence is sufficient to keep them out of the area.

General Pool Safety Tips:

  • Maintain Proper Chemical Balance: Regularly test and maintain the pool’s chemical balance to ensure safe swimming conditions.
  • Keep the Pool Area Clear: Remove toys and other objects from the pool and surrounding area to prevent tripping hazards.
  • Have a First-Aid Kit Handy: Keep a well-stocked first-aid kit readily available in case of minor injuries.
  • Emergency Plan: Create and practice an emergency plan in case of an accident. Ensure everyone knows how to call for help.
  • Sun Safety: Remember sunscreen, hats, and protective clothing for everyone, including pets, to prevent sunburn.
